Bill Marcum began training in Isshinryu Karate at Kent State University in the late1960s. After Bill earned his Black Belt under Master J.H. Kim, he continued teaching when Master Kim moved to New Jersey. Along with the KSU Karate Club, Bill managed the Pro Am Karate Studios. While at Kent, he also designed and organized the course curriculums taught at Kent. He instructed Karate, Self-Defense and Tai Chi Chuan at Kent State University.
Hanshi Marcum served as a member of the USA Karate Team, experiencing a successful career in national and international competition here and abroad. He competed in kilo, team, and open divisions in competitions, and fought in the first World Cup in Hungary, the PUKO Championships in Honduras, and the Open Championships in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. After he retired from international kumite, Bill began to coach the USA Teams. He coached the1992World Championships in Spain, coached for the North American Cup, coached for Junior PUKO Championships in Puerto Rico and Florida, as well as for other good will international events. He has also trained numerous junior and national team champions and was the Athletic Advisor to the Executive Committee for USA Karate.
He has been a top rated certified official in Karate for AAU, USNKF, and PUKO for over 40 years. He served as a member of the Education Committee ,the Dan testing board, and is presently a Senior Caucus Member of the National Karate Federation.
Master Bill Marcum, a 9th Dan in Isshinryu Karate ,also holds Shihanranksin Judo ,Ju Jitsu, and Kobudo.
Master Bill Marcum has taught Isshinryu Karate in his dojo for over 30 years in Kent ,Ohio . Along with his wife, Roxanne, they hosted the 5th IWKA Championships. He also conducts seminars, serves on committees, gives demonstrations, teaches at summer camps, and officiates in tournaments throughout the USA. He has truly excelled in the martial arts, for which he has great respect. He has done this with integrity, professionalism, and the utmost humility.
