Mark Rudd’s first contact with Isshinryu was around 1972, when as a 5th grader, he had the opportunity to go with a friend to a karate tournament in Ruston, LA at Louisiana Tech University. He saw and purchased a Mizugami (Isshinryu) patch and brought it home.
Fifteen years later, in March of 1987, he began Isshinryu training in Jonesboro, Louisiana under the instruction of Randy Buller, 2nd Dan. Mr Buller was a black belt of Sensei Albert Christman, who was associated with Sensei William Pogue, in Ruston, LA.
Mark Rudd was promoted to Shodan on Nov. 30, 1990. In the spring of 1991, he started teaching his brother, Donald Rudd, who had just finished service in the U.S. Navy and wanted to learn karate. After a few weeks of training (with the approval of his instructor) he started his first karate school in Dodson, Louisiana called Winn Isshinryu (Winn Parish, LA). That dojo is still operated by his brother and first student, Donald Rudd now 7th Dan.
In September, 1994 his job relocated him to Andalusia, Alabama. At the time, the nearest Isshinryu dojo was three hours away so in March of 1995 he started Andalusia Isshinryu Karate.
Master Rudd was promoted to Nanadan (7th Dan) in March of 2018 by Sensei Ronnie Brasher and Sensei Ed Johnson. Some of the highlights of Mark Rudd’s personal karate accomplishments include 2000 USYKA Black Belt National Karate Champion, member of the USKYA Black Belt Competition Team, 2005 USYKA Instructor of the Year, IHoF Men’s Black Belt Grand Champion Kumite, Kata and Weapons in 2002, 2006, 2007 and 2015. He has trained and promoted 48 students to the level of Black Belt.
Master Rudd is married to LouAnn McGrew Rudd, father of two and grandfather of three. He is a member of Southside Baptist Church in Andalusia, Alabama serving as a teacher, deacon, bass player in worship band, choir member and on different occasions, SS Director, Finance chairman and Deacon Chairman.
